If you’ve got a road test coming up, you’re probably wondering what the examiner is looking for. The good news? Most road test mistakes are completely avoidable.
At WINDS Driving School, we’ve helped many students prepare for their G2 and G road tests, and we’ve noticed a few common surprises that catch new drivers off guard.
Here are five things many students wish they had known sooner!
1. Your Examiner Is Not Trying to Fail You
Believe it or not, the examiner wants you to succeed.
They’re not looking for perfection. They’re looking for a driver who is safe, aware, and capable of making good decisions on the road.
A small mistake usually won’t fail you. Unsafe driving habits are what cause problems.
2. Your Blind Spot Check Needs to Be Obvious
You may know the blind spot is clear, but the examiner can’t read your mind!
One of the biggest mistakes students make is checking too quickly. Make your head movement noticeable so the examiner can clearly see you’re performing the check.
3. Parking Is Only a Small Part of the Test
Many students spend hours worrying about parallel parking.
While parking matters, examiners spend much more time evaluating:
- Observation skills
- Lane changes
- Speed control
- Decision making
- Intersection safety
Focus on becoming a well-rounded driver rather than a parking expert.
4. Confidence Looks Different Than Speed
Some new drivers think driving confidently means driving fast.
Actually, confident drivers:
- Stay calm
- Follow speed limits
- Check mirrors regularly
- Leave enough space
- Make smooth decisions
Confidence is about control, not speed.
5. Practice Beats Luck Every Time
There is no secret shortcut to passing a road test.
The students who succeed are usually the ones who:
- Ask questions
- Practice regularly
- Learn from mistakes
- Stay positive
The more experience you gain, the more comfortable you’ll feel when test day arrives.
